In the end I gave up
BE YOURSELF, EVERYONE ELSE IS TAKEN
As a model I learnt to be the perfect blank canvas. It’s exciting wearing a different mask everyday and it’s all fun and games until one day, you look in the mirror and you don’t know who or what you are. The scary thing is, I didn’t even realize it had happened until I stopped. I shared this sentiment with my friends and family around me and I quickly realized, I wasn't the only one.
We've all been there, haven't we? Chasing after an image, a persona, a life that isn’t quite ours. We compare ourselves to others, wishing we were taller, thinner, funnier, or more successful. We mould ourselves into shapes that we think will fit into the world's expectations, forgetting that the most captivating shape is the one we were born with. In the end, I gave up trying to be someone else.
It’s exhausting, isn’t it? To constantly play a role, to wear a mask. It’s like trying to squeeze a square peg into a round hole. It might fit, but it's uncomfortable and it’s not really you. So, how do we break free from this relentless pursuit of perfection and instead embrace the incredible, messy, beautiful person we truly are?
Tip 1: Silence the Noise
The world is a noisy place, filled with opinions, expectations, and unsolicited advice. It can be overwhelming. To find yourself, you need to tune out the noise. Spend some quiet time alone, whether it's a solitary walk in nature, a meditation session, or simply sitting in a quiet room. Give your mind a chance to rest and reflect.
Tip 2: Rediscover Your Passions
What ignited your spark as a child? What activities made you lose track of time? Rediscovering your passions can be a powerful way to reconnect with your authentic self. Whether it's painting, writing, dancing, or gardening, allow yourself to indulge in activities that bring you joy.
Tip 3: Embrace Your Imperfections
Nobody is perfect. We all have flaws, quirks, and vulnerabilities. Embracing your imperfections is a liberating experience. It's about accepting yourself as a whole person, not just the parts you think are acceptable. Remember, your uniqueness is what makes you extraordinary. It's like having a one-of-a-kind masterpiece; why would you want to paint over it?
Tip 4: Surround Yourself with Positive Influences
The people we surround ourselves with can significantly impact our self-perception. Make a conscious effort to spend time with individuals who uplift and support you. Their positive energy can be contagious, helping you to feel more confident and authentic.
Tip 5: Practice Self-Compassion
Discovering your true self is a journey, not a destination. There will be setbacks, doubts, and moments when you feel like giving up. Be kind to yourself during these times. Remember, self-compassion is not about being complacent; it's about treating yourself with the same understanding and care you would offer a friend.
Finding yourself is a courageous act. It requires honesty, vulnerability, and a willingness to let go of expectations. But the rewards are immense. When you embrace your true self, you'll experience a sense of freedom, authenticity, and fulfilment like never before. You'll attract genuine connections, pursue meaningful goals, and live a life that truly resonates with you.
So, take a deep breath, let go of the pressure to be someone else, and embark on this incredible journey of self-discovery. You are enough, exactly as you are.
Remember, the world needs your unique perspective, your talents, and your heart. Don't hide your light under a bushel. Shine brightly, and let your true self illuminate the world.
